Socializing within the Camps

Did they um, do you, do you remember any celebrations, holiday celebrations there?

Where, for me?

Yeah in this camp in the barracks.

No we didn't have any celebrations.

You don't remember like anything for Hanukah a special celebration or anything? Nobody thought of holidays?

No, no, no, no, no. If there was Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur for some people they started out in their own, their own place in their room put on the robe once if they religious put on a tallit and daven but not any special places to go, no.

Did you meet other people there--did you socialize at all?

Oh a lot.

You met in each other's rooms?

We, we met a lot of people living right next door to me the same barrack we knew each other we used to meet outside we used to meet and go to each other's places.

What did you do when you were together?

We were talking in stories, singing, laughing, crying. What do you do in places like this?

Was there any smuggling in there in order to bring in extra food?

Smuggling? Uh, some uh, people would buy them from the supermarkets and get it out and they sell it quietly behind you know if you want extra you have to um, it was a black market.

Did anything ever form like a resistance group in order to try and break out?

No, no.
